Bed Bugs Habitat and Behaviour

Bed bugs probably received their common name probably due to their close association with human sleeping beds. They are ectoparasites that attack not only humans but will also attack poultry, other mammals and birds.

The most common bed bug species in Singapore is the Tropical Bed Bug (Cimex hemipterus) . It is oval with a flattened body and is reddish-brown. Adults are about 5.5 mm in length and 3 mm in width.

Live sightings of adults and nymphs, blood stains on bed sheets and pillow covers, black faecal markings on bed sheets, mattresses, bed frames, skirting and a strong odour indicate an infestation at your premises.

Bed bugs are usually brought in from external sources. They may be introduced into your premises via second-hand furniture if the previous owner had a bed bug infestation. If you have family members or guests who have been overseas recently, consider washing their clothes and belongings in hot water (at least 70°C and above) to kill any live bed bugs that may have "hitched a ride".

Damages

Bed bugs are generally considered a nuisance pest causing itch with their bites. Although the bites are painless, most people develop an allergic reaction to the saliva injected by the insects when they bite. Swelling may be severe and extend beyond the immediate bite area in highly sensitive individuals. There is no evidence of bed bugs transmitting any diseases to humans. However, there remains concern due to secondary infections from scratching.
